Effects of Gambling Addiction

Compulsive gambling is a progressive mental obsession, which can have negative effects on all aspects of an individual\'’s life if the said illness is not immediately recognized and properly treated.

The primary effects of gambling addiction naturally involve the person himself. He may lose sleep and skip meals because of his gambling activities and may pick up other bad habits such as drinking and smoking to numb the pressure caused by winning and losing. All of which can pose a great danger to his health.

The second set of effects concern the family of the person. The family of a gambling addict can experience the same emotions as the gambler. These emotions include stress, exhaustion, denial, and desperation. Excessive debts caused by gambling are frequently cast down on the family. The family members of the gamblers are usually the ones that are harassed and hounded by debtors and credit card collection agents. Children of gambling addicts have a higher tendency to attempt suicide than their friends. These children also perform poorly in school and in socializing; additionally, they are more prone to alcohol and drug abuse than other young people.

Similar to the home, the effects of the gambling addiction of a person can be felt by his workplace. A gambling addict can become constantly late for work, absent at meetings, and tardy in appointments. These in turn will lead to a decrease in the quality of output produced by the addict. Lastly, some of the more extreme effects of gambling addiction include theft of company-owned merchandise or property, which may lead to prosecution and incarceration.
